Guidelines for Testifying In Court
Being called to court to testify, whether you are a party or a collateral witness, is an intimidating experience. However, some simple rules will make the experience better.
- ALWAYS tell the truth
- Listen carefully to the question
- Do not rush to answer the question -- if you don't understand, ask the attorney rephrase it
- If you forget the question, ask that the attorney repeat it
- Be precise in your answers and do not exaggerate
- Answer orally and loud enough for the court and court reporter to hear
- Do not argue with the opposing attorney
- Ignore the demeanor, facial expressions and tone of voice of opposing counsel
