Houston's DePelchin Children's Center offers virtual parenting experience for pre-teens

This summer DePelchin Children’s Center is offering a youth pregnancy prevention program for pre-teens called “Baby, Think it Over.” Compared to other states across the country, Texas has a high teen pregnancy rate. Federal statistics indicate that out of every 1,000 teenage girls in Texas between the age of 15 and 19, there are 62 births. Nationally, teenage pregnancy is on the rise for the first time since the 1990’s.

The program requires participants to care for computerized dolls pre-programmed that cry, have tantrums, need feedings, and diaper changes. Most of the participants reported that taking care of the virtual baby was harder than they anticipated.
